Wakefield Museums and Castles

This fun Home Education workshop is designed for children aged 10+. Join us as we fire up the replica oven at Pontefract Castle. Have a go at baking your own Elizabethan-style gingerbread!

In this workshop we will:

• help tend the oven as it comes up to temperature

• mix the ingredients for a traditional gingerbread dough

• discover Queen Elizabeth I's love of gingerbread

• bake beautiful biscuits in the wood-fired oven

• decorate our biscuits with edible gold leaf to make treats fit for royalty!

Please note:

• There is a strict minimum age of 10 years for this workshop. We cannot accommodate younger participants or younger siblings.

• Adults must remain present throughout the session to supervise and assist the participating children in their care.

• This workshop will use gluten-based and dairy-based ingredients. If you are concerned about food allergies or intolerances, please contact us before booking.

• This workshop will involve a wood fire and high temperatures. The fire / oven will be tended throughout the workshop by trained staff. Children will be closely supervised when interacting with the oven. If you have any concerns about these aspects of the workshop, please contact us before booking.

• Elements of the workshop will take place outside. Please come dressed for the weather.
