Wakefield Museums and Castles

SEND classes

We are always happy to speak directly with SEND teachers to create bespoke educational experiences that best suit your pupils’ particular needs and learning styles.

Whether we are coming into your school, or your class is coming out to visit one of our sites, let's work together.

Available sessions

If one of the workshops described in this programme appeals to you, please contact us to discuss how we might amend it for your SEND pupils.

Some other popular topics that we have the capacity to deliver sessions on include:

  • Life in a medieval castle
  • Tudor feasts
  • Victorian childhood
  • Animals and nature

Preliminary visits and visual stories

We can also make preliminary visits to your school. This way your pupils can meet our staff and we can introduce topics before the main workshop date.

We have visual stories for our three museums:

New sessions and requests

If one of our core workshops appeals to you, please contact us to discuss how we might amend it for your SEND pupils.

If there is a topic that we don’t already offer, but you think we might be able to support you in teaching, please get in touch.

New sessions will be piloted free of charge in exchange for teacher input and feedback.

Self-led visits

We also welcome self-led visits to our sites. We can provide support resources for SEND classes.

At Pontefract Castle and Wakefield Museum we can book our learning spaces for self-led SEND classes to use as a base during their visit. This depends on availability.

Both self-led visits and the use of learning spaces by self-led SEND classes are free but must be booked with us in advance. This is to avoid clashes with other groups.

To arrange a discussion or make a booking please email us at museumslearning@wakefield.gov.uk.
