This stunning shoe dates from the Georgian period. It belonged to the Clarkson family of Alverthorpe Hall.

Roman oil lamp

This Roman oil lamp was excavated in Castleford. The Romans knew the town as Lagentium. 

Ancient Romans burned olive oil in lamps to light their buildings. Oil produced a cleaner and steadier flame than animal fat candles.

Bagley's and Co glass boat

This glass boat was sold as a souvenir of Great Yarmouth. It was made and hand painted by Bagley and Co Ltd in Knottingley.

Local holidaymakers in the 1950s to 1970s might have been bringing back a piece of home from their travels!

Celtic head

A Celtic stone head was found buried in the rockery at The Old Vicarage, Chapelthorpe. It is part of our permanent collection.

Enamelled plate

This enamelled plate was made by Wedgwood in the early 1800s. It is part of a set with a matching fruit stand. It was donated to the collection by Alfred Greaves of Walton in the 1960s.

Jet cross

This jet cross was found during excavations at St John's Priory, Pontefract.

Jet crosses with ring and dot markings are usually found in Yorkshire. They may have been made at Whitby Abbey.

Medieval stone face

This is a piece of medieval carved stonework. The face is from a larger piece of stone. It was part of a tomb canopy at St John's Priory in Pontefract.

This design is inspired by a medieval floor tile. Contrasting colours of clay, or slip, were used to create the floral pattern.
