We are delighted to announce we have been successful in our application to The Exhibitions Group for an Access to Exhibitions Grant!
This pilot scheme by The Exhibitions Group has been created to enable museums, galleries and heritage organisations to design exhibitions with fewer barriers for disabled people. It will also help to embed specific accessibility measures into their exhibitions.
This funding will support Wakefield Museum’s upcoming Special Exhibition, Plastic Fantastic? (20 July 2026 – 19 June 2027).
The exhibition will draw on our nationally renowned collection of mid 20th century plastics. It will explore the impacts of plastics, inviting visitors to consider their changing role in our lives and their effect on our planet.
Funding from The Exhibitions Group will support us to pilot several new accessibility improvements. These include tactile objects, labelling and wayfinding. We will also have new BSL interpretation complemented by D/deaf awareness training for our team.
The access improvements will particularly benefit blind and partially sighted, D/deaf and neurodivergent audiences. The interpretation and resources will all be co-developed with these communities.
Our project is one of ten selected to receive a grant as part of this cohort.
The Exhibitions Group is an Arts Council England funded sector support organisation and a membership body.
