Parade day in Fryston, Jack Hulme, 1950s
Collected in 1998
Currently on display at Castleford Museum
Pit village photographer, Jack Hulme, documented Fryston at work and at play. His pictures capture community spirit at many special events. He photographed Coronation parties and the V.E. Day celebrations at the end of the Second World War.
Galas and carnivals were a chance for mining communities like Fryston to come together. They decorated the streets and dressed up for parades.
In this shot, a young girl in her best dress enjoys a prime view of the celebrations with the colliery on the horizon.
