An old glass bottle with 'Castleford' on it, as part of the moulded design

John Lumb and Co in Castleford made this codd bottle for a local drinks manufacturer.

Codd bottles used a marble as a stopper. They met a growing demand for bottles for newly invented fizzy drinks. They helped grow the glass industry in Castleford.

By 1900 Castleford was producing 20 million bottles a year. Castleford became Britain's biggest centre of bottle manufacturing. The glassworks sold their bottles all over the world.
